Pastor Philip Houser’s Sermon — Jesus’ parable about the master and steward in Matthew 16 is not about the steward who can’t be trusted. It’s about the master who’s a just man and has a right to faithful service from the steward. When exposed the steward plays, “Let’s Make a Deal” to try to get out from under what he has done. We are like the steward in that we can’t fulfill the law, so we try to work our way into Heaven with works righteousness. The central message of this parable is not about justice, but rather God’s mercy. Our righteousness is born of Faith, God’s mercy and Jesus Christ who took our sins upon the cross.
